Dell laptop : Latitude CPx J650

Property Value
Aquired This was the first Dell laptop I bought via Marktplaats. I bought it in Tilburg from a guy who wanted to buy a newer one. He showed me the machine working with Windows 98. He told about one battery being not so good. He forgot to tell about the dead CD ROM drive.
CPU Intel Mobile Pentium III, 650 MHz
RAM The machine has a bigger memory bay so it will accept any size 144 pin SO-DIMM SDRAM boards. As is, the machine had 384 MB of memory. Later on the 256 MB module died.
OS As is the 650 was equipped with Windows 97 or something. I removed it for something better.
Harddisk 4 GB 2.5" harddisk
Addons The machine came with the base unit, two batteries (one good), broken CDR unit, FDD and power supply.
Price € 150

The broken CDR unit

This was not a very easy fault to discover. Thee CDR unit would read the first half o each CD flawlessly. And then it started to introduce random read errors. The CD's performed well in other units so I decided to repair the unit.

I looked around for affordable Dell CDR units but these were not available. So I bought a cheap laptop CD drive at an Ebay auction (€1 for the drive, €6 for shipping), removed the old drive and adapted the CDR bay to fit the new Compaq laptop CD drive.

Operating system

There is an operating system on this machine although I forgot which one.... I know it is Slackware, but what version? 11?

I gave the machine to my cousin Arnold Geerts. Hope it's still alive... :o)
