WA3-50 in client mode

I did a similar test with the previous version of Longshine, the WA5-45. This was a nice experience. Suddenly I ended up with an invisible UTP cable of arbitray length. Covering places where UTP is not possible or acceptable. I repeated this test for the new WA3-50.
The WA5-45 had to be put in Client mode by flipping a tiny switch on the back panel. The WA3-50 doesn't even need THAT. Flipping a control button in software is enough for it. What it boils down to is:

If you want to log on to an encrypted sugnal, you will need to enter the passphrase and encryption type in the appropriate section.

Wireless Basic Settings

To the right you see the wireless basic settings. For all who cannot see this picture, these are the settings in a text mode:

If you want to log on to an encrypted sugnal, you will need to enter the passphrase and encryption type in the appropriate section. But Neutrino is an open AP so that is not necessary.

Experiences

The Client worked almost out of the box. Which normally means you forgot something. But not in this case. Which is a good sign.

The setup of the apparatus is as follows (see also the pictures below):

The external power supply is not required in this case.

After heving entered the correct values, I was imemdiately able to browse the web and to use ncftp to transfer files. The speed however was rather disappointing: only 500 kbps downstream, whereas my cable ISP gives me 5 Mbps. In the end however, it was perfectly logical why I got such a low datarate: The neutrino AP is reduced in speed, since it is an open AP. Knowing that, the speed is right on target.

When I log on to the AP with the current settings, and a UTP cable connected between the AP and a switch, you're in for a surprise. You may make changes to your hearts desire, but you cannot save them. As if you were connected to the AP by WLAN. And still, the UTP cable is used.
But when I remove the UTP cable, I can still access the AP. Apparently, I was not connected to the AP client by UTP, but through the Neutrino AP server. This now is a disadvantage since you can only make changes to a WA3-50 when you enter it via UTP. Still, it can be easily remedied by using a stand alone computer and a small stretch of UTP cable.

Download the settings here for the WA3-50 AP in client mode (for the factory default IP address 192.168.1.1).
