Eagle: get started

First you need to get yourself a copy of the software for your operating system. Or for Windows of course. Get it at one of the websites of the maker:

My version is '4.16r1 for Linux'. It runs, it makes circuits and PCB's. So I have no reason or intention to change any part of it. Let alone upgrade it. My system information:

Most of the things work. I just cannot perform group operations. But I don't miss that.

Installation

I wish all installations were as simple as with Eagle: just do as the manual tells you! If you run an operating system on your computer: now is the time to decide whether you are going to install Eagle in your /home/xxx filesystem, or in /opt/eagle.

In the former case, YOU are the owner of the libraries and updating one becomes very easy. BUT, other users will have a terrible time running Eagle and maintaining your libraries.
In the latter case, everyone will be able to run Eagle and use all libraries. But eah and every time you want to modify something silly, you need to su yourself in order to become root.

Of course this only applies to people running a real operating system. If you run with Windows, it just doesn't matter. It's all great fun.

I installed Eagle in /opt/eagle and when I need to do maintenance I change into 'root' to do things. This way I protect myself against accidental damage to libraries and such.

Maintenance

Eagle is german, just like Mecedes, BMW and Volkswagen. So also Eagle just runs and runs and keeps on running. Almost no maintenance required. But sometimes you want to include new libraries. To do so:

That's all there is with maintenance. Upgrading is another story. Never tried it. Perhaps someone else has and can make a webpage about it.
